I recently attended a Once Upon a Time event in Bournemouth. It’s always a good event, held in the beautiful Shelley theatre (once home to Mary Shelley) and organised by the indomitable duo of Mark Masters and Matt Desmier. Between them their contact list must be among the best and longest in the land of digital creatives, communicators (of all breeds) and entrepreneurs.

At this latest event we heard from four great speakers which I wrote about last week. One stood out for me for his enthusiasm and energy, and his authenticity and humanity. The person he was on stage, was the person I imagined he’d be before I heard him speak, and when I met him a week later for a coffee and to find out more, he was exactly the same.

Did it work?

When I last posted, I had about three posts on the go. This is one of those posts, all of which got totally derailed by lots of exciting work. So, at last here’s a quick and simple run down of why you should measure and a list of useful metrics to help measure communication results on a budget.

It is always good to know where you are heading. Even if you decide to change direction, at least if you have a strategy, you can adapt your plan to suit your aim. (more…)

Learning more

One of my three things for 2013 was to trust my instinct. I’ve been freelancing in Bournemouth for a little over two years now and as a qualified professional with lots of different experience from my employed work across public and private sectors I’ve been able to attract some exciting work and interesting clients. But I wanted to give my business and myself some focus – a direction for my career. I’ve felt for a little while I wanted to add a specialism to my skills and that I wanted to return to some study to get a deeper knowledge. (more…)

I recently attended the CIPR Inside conference, ‘putting employees first’. There was a great turnout and some brilliant speakers. The theme of the event was thought to be controversial, and I believe it’s something that no organisation can afford to ignore.

We live in a world where deference is a thing of the past. We don’t trust our bosses, the media or politicians. So against that backdrop, I believe employees are more influential than ever before as a trusted source and employers must harness their ideas and engage with employees if they want to be more successful.
