Brilliant People, Amazing Culture – All About People

Reading Time: 4 minutes

On Thursday 5 and Friday 6 June a group of like-minded people gathered in a seafront hotel in Bournemouth for the All About People conference. I find the culture of organisations and the shift to people focussed business fascinating, so I joined the event and I’ll share some of the insights from the two days here. Andy Swann, the creator of the event first wanted to just bring a few people together to share ideas and have some fun, but it soon grew into the All About People event. In Andy’s words from his welcome: “I’m not going to tell you want to expect from #aapcon14, the opportunity is there to create your own experience. Informal yes, idealistic maybe, human certainly.” And that nicely sums up exactly what the event turned out to be. (more…)

Pop-up PR and a pint

Last year I created 'Pop-up PR and a pint', a chance for anyone working in comms and PR across Dorset to meet and share ideas, challenges and learning. I'm planning to do more later this year. Business is really busy right now which is great for me as a freelancer…

Why?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Why, is one of my favourite words. Why? Because, it’s small, and yet so powerful.

WHY???

It’s a word we use effortlessly as a child. My two children are relentless in their questioning. Why this, why that… I can get quite frustrated, but not because they are inquisitive, but rather that it means I have to find and explain the answer.  This can sometimes be quite difficult when you’ve lived with that fact for so long you just accept it. Does anyone know why the sky is blue? (more…)

Put your network to work

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s been nearly two years since I first started working for myself. I thought I’d share some of my experience, what works, what doesn’t and more. Here’s my view on ‘real’ networking, not social.

Everyone knows that networking is vital to business. We live in a world where it really is about who you know and not just what you know. So much so, there’s a whole industry around networking. In fact there are so many groups to choose from it’s difficult to know where to start. Some charge a membership, some are just breakfast clubs, some are associated to chambers of commerce or the federation of small business, you name it there’s a group for it. (more…)

Starting out? Show off your skills

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s been nearly two years since I first started working for myself. I thought I’d share some of my experience, what works, what doesn’t and more. First up, getting out there.

My first step was going to a local business seminar in Bournemouth where I thought I’d discuss my business idea and come away with a plan. I met my first client there, we’ve worked together ever since and I’ve never looked back. (more…)

LinkedIn power

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A debate has been raging on LinkedIn in one of the PR groups I belong to. The simple question was: Choice or Chance? How did you get into your PR career?

The response has been incredible. So many people have joined in and many answered the poll (currently choice 28 – 37%  and chance 47 – 62%). As one of the early voters I’ve received regular emails updating me on the conversation, and it’s put Jason Wassell who started it all as a top influencer of the group. (more…)
